The Bloom Forum | Project 52 | week 5

Welcome to week 5 of my 2012 project 52. This is a personal project that I decided to take on this year with many wonderful and talented photographers from The Bloom Forum. Last week I “had” to sit out on the post because I was still sipping Mai Tai’s poolside on the big Island of Hawaii. Can’t say that I would go back and change that, but I can say that I am glad to be posting this week with all of the wonderful photographers in this blog-circle. As always remember that you can visit the next photographer in the circle and see how she has interpreted the theme by following the links in each post.
This week our theme is {Discovery}. I had a couple of ideas for this one that originally involved a white lab coat and a microscope and some very cool but nerdy lab glasses. But alas my lab coat, like me, is on sabbatical and I didn’t think my boss would let me borrow a $$$$$ microscope, so I went with my next idea…

First there is THE COUNT
Then The HIDE
Followed very quickly by THE SEEK
And always ending with THE DISCOVERY!

Now don’t forgot to follow the next very talented photographer in this circle, my friend Alison Crane | San Francisco Bay Area Photographer.

Auberry

Our time in Auberry. We made the trip at Christmas time to spend the holidays with family. The kids were all together. The grandparents got their snuggles. We all got a few days to enjoy the open space outside. The john deer tractors are always a favorite, as well as digging in the dirt, collecting acorns, or rolling down the hillside, catching a sunset over the foothills, and enjoying warm homemade biscuits. The holiday season can be so very busy, but this year we had a chance to slow ourselves, enjoy meals with family, and savor our time together.

Faceless Portrait | San Francisco Bay Area Family Photographer | Project 26

Yay, it is Thursday and it is time for my second Project 26 post. I am sharing this creative journey with some amazingly talented photographers across the United States. To catch a glimpse of how each of us interpreted this weeks theme, follow the links at the end of my post.

Our creative theme, was faceless portrait. I originally interpreted this theme as faceless self portrait, and so I did take one of those. But alas, this blog has seen TWO selfies (here and here) in less than a week, and I am quite tired of seeing myself on this blog. On to more handsome subjects!

Bloom Forum | Project 52 | Week 3

Welcome back to my Project 52 post. I am participating with 16 very talented photographers worldwide. Each week we creatively interpret different themes and prompts. As always, be sure to follow the links at the bottom of my post to see the how the next photographer in the blog circle photographed the theme!

This week our theme is {monochromatic}. Monochromatic is defined as having or consisting of one color or hue. I decided to go pretty simple on this theme. I was planning to put together a monochromatic collage (have you ever seen the collage boards at Snippet and Ink LOVE?), but I had to shoot this theme about a week in advance and I was limited on time. When this post goes live, I will be basking in the warmth of the Hawaiian sun and wading in the brilliant blue ocean! Mahalo friends!

{Monochromatic – white)
I realized after I shot this that the color white is technically the combination of all colors in the visible spectrum. But I am sure that all of you won’t mind the technicality (insert geeky nerdy brainy smile here).

10-on-10 | January 2012 Edition

Currently, my days are filled with time. I am on an 8 week sabbatical from work and I am using this time to ‘find myself’ after a really long 2011. I started this 10-on-10 project at a time when my work life was crazy and hectic, and at a time when there was a lot of change happening in my family. I felt like my photography really reflected the crazy hectic circle of life that I was leading. Finally, I am slowly relaxing, the tension in my shoulders is easing, my curt tone of words is lessening and the rubber band that was wound WAY too tight is slowly unraveling…inhale, exhale.
In the midst of ringing in 2012, I was pleased to shoot my 10-on-10 on a very lazy Saturday this past week. If you are new to my blog, my 10-on-10 post is about capturing the moment, photographing those slices of life that tell a story, that make you feel like you were there. These are the photographs that I want my kids to look back on, and really ‘see’ the life we experienced as a family. I am joined in this project by 9 other photographers with similar goals of capturing real life. Be sure to follow the links to the next photographers blog in this circle.

This month, I find I am fascinated with pockets of light that I don’t get to see during the day because I am usually at work. I love light, I love how it dances, reflects, diffracts, and creates shadows. So you’ll see some of my favorite light.

Now I am thrilled to be sharing this project with Chesney Maxwell | The Maxwell House Family & Photography Blog . She is an amazing photographer, with the cutest girls you’ve ever seen! When your done checking out what my day looked like, head on over and see how she captured hers.

The Bloom Forum | Project 52 | Week 2

Wow, this week must be the week of self portraits.  I just wrapped up my Project 52 from 2011, where our project started and ended with a self portrait.  And this project 52 blog-circle is kicking off Week 2 with self-portraits.  I think self portraits can tell a lot about where a photographer is in their creative journey.  Some are funny, light-hearted, moody, or melancholy.  Best of all they are another form of self expression that can reveal a piece of the artist bit by bit.  This is me, my second self-portrait this week.  Want to see the other one, click here!

Fifty-two on Fridays | Self Portrait

We are here at the end of our 52 week journey, and I am letting out a huge sigh…..

I am in awe that 52 weeks have passed since our group started this creative journey.  I was thinking today of how I would describe this journey and waves of different words washed over me.  The one that sticks the most is ‘Proud’.  I am so proud of each and every one of the photographers in this group.  We started out as 17 strangers, only virtual friend by way of a forum and each week that we chose to participate was week that we grew closer to our art and to each other.

Personally, for me, somewhere in August I began to struggle in my photography.  I felt like my photographic voice and my vision were lost or stuck, and I was watching all of my friends grow leaps and bounds.  I became sad and frustrated.  During this period I began exploring film and it has helped to slowly clear the fog, but I am still wrestling with who I am as a photographer.  But an amazing thing happened today.  Today, I started putting together my project 52 album to capture in one book this year long photographic journey.  In the hours that I spent dragging and dropping pictures, copying and pasting text my eyes opened.  And that one word, Proud, it resonated again.  But this time, I could say, I am Proud of myself.  Going through all of the weeks worth of photos I can see that I have grown, that I started to find my style somewhere in June, that my vision and voice didn’t get lost, but instead is slowly becoming refined.

I would like to say ‘Thank You’ to all of my Project 52 peeps.  Every week we spent together creating, was a week that I became inspired.  I also want to say GINORMOUS (not really a word, but it should be) ‘Thank You’ to Hope Toliver for coordinating the project from the first week.  Hope you did one amazing job, and I am so so thankful for your friendship.

We are ending this project with how we started, with a self portrait.  This is me.

Me and Mine | San Francisco Peninsula Family Photographer | Project 26

One of many reasons that I am excited to kick off the new year is the commencement of the Project 26. My friend Hope Toliver and I in 2011 started sharing a monthly post called, “Me and Mine”, where each month we tried as hard as we could to get in pictures with our children, our families, with our husbands. In 2012, this little project has branched out to include an amazing group of woman that also share a similar desire to be in the pictures with their families. We have also decided to take on some challenging creative projects alongside the “Me and Mine” post each month, so be on the look out for those too. The wonderful aspect of sharing this project each month with 12 other photographers is that at the end of my post you can follow the link to the next photographer in the project.

When you are a photographer, being in the pictures with your children or family is no small task, who is going to take the picture. I can’t tell you how many times I get all the settings just right and I hand the camera over to my well-intentioned husband and he immediately turns the knob to auto…grrr. I spend too much time trying to get the perfect setting, the perfect shot, and by the time this is all finalized, my kids are gone…running down the street, rolling around in the grass, jumping off the couch, and the opportunity is lost. Personally, I need to let go a bit. The photos that I have from my childhood with my mom that I treasure most are not perfect, they’re not perfectly exposed or gorgeously backlit, or set up so that everyone is in focus. But they are PERFECT in that I am incredibly thankful to have the handful of them. So here I am in 2012, I’m going to get in front of this camera with my lovies, with my hubby, with my mom, my brother, my grandmother because I love them more than anything in this world. I’m going to let go a bit, and not worry about them being “perfect”, but instead just. be. in. them!

It’s a New Year with a new project

Happy New Year! I am excited to share that I am participating in another Project 52 with several ladies from The Bloom Forum. I completed my first Project 52 just this last week and it was such a wonderful experience. I am filled with anticipation as I join another group of very talented photographers to explore different themes and prompts each week. You can see all of the yummy goodness from each of the talented photographers by following the links at the end of each post. You won’t be disappointed!

Our first theme is {New Year}. I am thankful that 2012 is here and I am looking forward to what this {New Year} will hold for my family. In the last half of 2011 I started on a wonderful artistic journey exploring film photography. This new year, I am hoping to shoot even more film for my personal and family projects. Film is slowly helping to pull me out of an artistic and personal rut. This New Year, I hope to experience many many joyful moments with my family, like maybe jumping up and down on a bed just because it is fun, or waving your legs in the air to get a wiggle out.

All I can say, is thank goodness I have young children to show me how to live this New Year!

Happy New Year to all of you in 2012!
