The Bloom Forum | Project 52 | Week 9

Welcome back to my Project 52, where I join 16 other wonderful photographers from around the globe to explore and interpret different photographic themes.  As always in this project you can view the work of the next photographer in the blog circle by following the links in our posts.

This week our theme or prompt is {Related}.  This word brought to mind memories from my childhood, where I could always count on one thing, my brother.  Without a doubt you knew my brother and I were {Related}.  We looked so much a like, but also like our individual selves.  My brother and I were so close in age and spent so much time together that often we were mistaken for twins.  Now  a days, I have two of my own.  They are the same age apart as my brother and I.  I watch them wondering if people, just know that they are {Related}, not only by how like look a like, but also by their play, their interaction, their comfort with one another?  Either way, I am thankful that they were always have each other!

Film Fridays | Our Family Vacation Part 2

Friday is here and I am very excited to share the launch of a new project here on the last Friday of each month called FILM FRIDAYS.  I am joining a group of photographers from around the globe that have a desire to set down their digital side kicks and go analog for a roll or two.  Some of us have just picked up a film camera for the first time ever, others have years of experience shooting film prior to shooting digital. What is exciting is that you will see people shooting medium format film, 35mm, different film stocks, professional lab development, Walgreens lab development, home scanning, straight scan, color corrected scans, manual focus, autofocus.  Some of cameras that the ladies use in this project are 30 – 40 years old and take the most gorgeous photos you have ever laid eyes on.  Get ready!

On a personal note, why do I shoot film…I returned to shooting film during a “Winter” in my photography journey last year.  Shooting in film opened up a whole new area of learning and exploration that I hadn’t yet sunk my teeth into.  I can’t explain why, but when shooting film, I relax a bit, and my composition and vision comes much more easily.  I am a complete novice at shooting film, but after many years of shooting digital I have decided this year to photograph as many of my personal family projects in film, as is possible.

Here is my first roll to kick off Film Fridays.

This roll is from our recent family vacation.  I posted a previous roll from our vacation here and this is part 2 of our journey.  Stay tuned next week for more rolls of yummy tropical goodness!

And if you are the curious kind, these were all photographed using a Mamiya 645 ProTL medium format camera using a manual focus 80 mm 2.8 lens.  These were all metered using the trusty Light Meter App for my iPhone.  The film stock that I used is Fuji 400H and was developed by Richards Photo Lab using Jose Villa color profile on file.

Next up in the Film Fridays is Kathy Guzman | Central New Jersey Portrait Photographer

The Bloom Forum | Project 52 | Week 8

Short on time and ideas this week, I am Instagraming (I think this now a word, just like Googling) my project 52. When this post goes live, my family and I will be traveling on United Airlines back home to the San Francisco Bay Area. My sabbatical is coming to close (insert really sad sad face here) and we are fitting in last minute trips to see family. I am really hoping to keep this project alive after I return to work. Keep me honest ladies!

This week our group theme is United. Instantly what comes to mind is the long plane ride we took on United Airlines to and from Hawaii with a 4 year old and 3 year old this past January. They were so well behaved I couldn’t believe it!

As always you can see how each photographer in the blog circle interpreted the theme by following the link at the end of my post!

Stories | San Francisco Bay Area Lifestyle Photography | Project 26

In my mind I can spin the most fantastic stories. In words, not so much. With my camera, I do a bit better. This month our Project 26 group chose the theme of {Stories} to express our creative selves. I had my plan, the photo shoot all laid out, and WHAM, sickness visited my house. Not all was lost though. Instead of my original idea, which I involved Superman and a very handsome blondie of mine, I instead decided to tell the story of one of my baking adventures.
If you don’t know, I LOVE to bake more than cook and I love to try out new recipes and techniques. For me it’s kinda of like a science experiment. This particular baking experiment was to make the very popular Cake Pops. You know you’ve seen them in the Starbucks pastry display! The cake pop recipe I used is from Bakerella, the cake pop queen! Well, this particular baking experiment started out with the best of intentions. I wanted to make these cute treats for my kids Valentine’s Day parties. Who wouldn’t love a cute pink pop? I experimented, and they worked, but no one enjoyed these pink treats. Why you might ask…they all ended up in the trash bin! WAY TOO SWEET! So sweet they gave me a toothache. They were pretty to look at and a lot fun to make, but I still need to figure out how to make them not so sugary sweet. Anyway, the story of the cake pops…

As always remember to check out how each photographer interpreted the theme by the following the links.  Next up in our blog circle this week is Shea Parker | Jackson Mississippi Child Photographer.

our family vacation | one roll of film at a time

Do you ever feel so blessed that you think you might wake up and realize that your life is a dream? That is how I am feeling when I see these images from our family vacation. Really, this was our first “traveling” vacation with the kids and it was a huge success. We’ve taken short trips to the grandparents or over to Carmel, but nothing that ever required a plane ride. I wont’ say where we went, I will let the pictures speak for themselves. One very exciting (at least for me) aspect of our family vacation was that I made the decision to document our trip using film. Film, you say, “Whaat?”. Yes. I said film. For those of you who didn’t get the memo, Film is Not Dead! I carefully packed up my medium format camera and several rolls of Fuji 400H, Kodak Portra 400, and Kodak Portra 800 and come what may in the end captured our time together. I am impatiently waiting for the scans of the developed film to trickle in from Richard Photo Lab. There are squeals of delight when I open the scans and get to relive our family time together. Now I am sharing them with you, One Roll At A Time.

Interested in knowning more about how you can too shoot film, check out the blog of Jonathan Canlas, and his newly released book Film is Not Dead. It doesn’t disappoint!

The Bloom Forum | Project 52 | Week 7

Welcome to the Sunday edition of The Bloom Forum Project 52. We are at week 7 and in anticipation of one of my favorite holidays, Valentine’s Day our group theme this week is {Pink}.  As always follow the link at the end of my post to see the next photographer in the circle and how she interpreted the prompt {Pink}!

Recently, I just got the new iPhone 4S. I am in love with this phone and one of the many reasons is because of it’s amazing 8 megapixel camera. This camera rocks. I’ve gotten hooked on Instagram using my phone and have found that it is super easy to pull out of my purse when there is a moment that I want to capture and I don’t have my “big” camera with me. One of the little obsessions that I have using this little camera phone is capturing sunsets. And let me tell you the last couple of weeks in California the sunsets, the not-so-great “spare the air” days, and the 70-degree weather has afforded some pretty amazing {PINK} skies.

If you would like to follow my Instagram feed, my tag is simple, its “jaymefranklin”

10-on-10 | February Edition

I have found that over the last couple months that personal projects are a must! Whether they are photography, journaling, crafting, baking, etc…personal projects help us to grow and sometime find ourselves when we are a little bit lost. My 10-on-10 project is a personal project aimed at capturing my family in more photos. Capturing them and who they really are. But for me this project is also about sharing those moments. How many of you have hundreds of photos of your family that sit on your hard drive where few of them see the light of day because your too busy blogging other peoples family session, or you just don’t have the energy at the end of the day to cull, edit, and prepare the images for a blog post. I fall into both of these categories at times, and this is why I love the 10-on-10 project. I make a point of shooting for myself and sharing those photos!

This month, I did something a little bit different. 10 photos, in 10 minutes. Shooting with more intent and really working to take a photo that sings to me. This is going to be different than how most of my friends in this blog-circle approached this project, which is typically 10 photos over 10 hours, documenting the day. But in our group we have an understanding, this project is personal and we want to shoot what inspires us, what makes us happy. Remember you can catch a glimpse of each of photographers’ days by following the link at the end of my post.

I decided to have what I call a, “Simple Session” with my youngest, full of uncomplicated goodness. 10 photos, 10 minutes, thats it. I feel like these really captured her. She is sweet, she is still a toddler with her lovey, she is sassy, she is happy, she is shy-ish, she is mommy’s love bug. She is mine.

{10-on-10} 10 photos over 10 minutes, shown in the order taken. To see other Simple Sessions, go here and here.

Next up this month in the 10-on-10 is my sweet and talented friend Laurie Vengoechea of A Favored Life.  Also if you get a moment check out her Food Photography Challenge and her recipes (yum)…amazing work!

The Bloom Forum | Project 52 | Week 6

We are here are week 6 of The Bloom Forum Project 52. This creative and personal photography project is fueled by 16 very talented photographers worldwide. Each week we interpret in our own way a theme or prompt and make a blog post from it. As always you can catch a glimpse of how the next photographer in the blog-circle interpreted the theme by following the link at the end of this post.

This week our theme is grounded. Words that come to mind to describe {grounded} are stable, foundation, justified, fundamental, soil, earth.
For me, this image defines them all.

Next up in this amazing group of photographers is Alison Crane | SF Bay Area Photographer.

Me and Mine | San Francisco Bay Area Family Photographer | Project 26

Can you believe that February is already here? I can’t, but it makes me super excited because I know that Spring is only around the corner. Yay!! As I write today’s post I am thinking of my little girl who is enjoying a day at preschool with her friends. I asked her last night if she missed me when she was at school and she answered, “No”. What??? Her answer made me realize that she is growing up, she is making friends, that I am no longer the center of her universe, even though in my eyes she is still my baby, my little girl. Realizing that my baby is growing up make me even more thankful for my Me and Mine posts. I want to be in pictures wrapping my arms around my kids, so that they can look back and know how much I love them. I am sharing this Me and Mine project with some amazingly talented photographers, and at the end of my post you can follow the link to the next photographer in the circle. I can’t wait to see all of their bright shiny happy faces alongside the loves in their lives.

I have to say that I getting a picture with my loves this month was challenging. Either I wasn’t happy with the photo, or the kiddos just weren’t feelin’ it! At one point I considered just taking a picture of myself holding a cup of coffee, I LOVE coffee, it would count right? Thankfully, my husband agreed to pushing the shutter button a few more times, as well as corral the natives to get this series.

This is how it started out, a photo with my oldest. Man I love this little boy! Mind you my youngest is in the house having a tantrum because no one is there to help her put on her crocs (she can put her crocs on all by herself!)

San-Francisco-Family-Photographer-1

She has found her crocs and is yelling now for her brother, no one can make him smile like his sister can!

Here she comes, full speed down the hill in her pink crocs (which she got on by herself)

I got lucky and my husband got got one shot with me and both of my loves.

And this is how it ends, a photo of me and my baby girl.

Now, the fun part! You can head on over and see my friend Shea Parker | Clinton Mississippi Family and Child Photographer and her adorable family!
