Film Fridays June Edition

One roll a film, posted on the last Friday of each month, a shared project with some pretty amazing women photographers = Film Fridays :-)

This month I am sharing a few images from my time spent at the Sanctuary Ministries Womens Retreat at Asilomar. I took a ton of camera gear with me to the retreat ready to take pictures non-stop. But instead, I felt led by God to put my camera away and just soak in the goodness of Him, and allow myself to be cared for by some pretty amazing women in my life. Putting down the camera in a way made me vulnerable to Him and to the women at the retreat. My time at the retreat was filled with awesome worship, renewing tears, and the best hugs from friends and my Sisters that money can’t buy. Thank you to the women of Sanctuary Ministries for being you and loving God.

This is me and my best friend of 20+ years. It is through her and her family that God changed my life when I was 14 years old. For her friendship, I am beyond words thankful!

a scraped knee

What happened? Between wails you try to tell about your scraped knee. There are tears streaming down your face. A cradled hug and kiss to your tears to comfort you, my sweet dear. A little ice, and another hug, brings to close this moment of a parents love.

And the crowds went wild…

It has taken me a couple of weeks to recover from a very exciting and emotional week/weekend of celebrating my son’s graduation from pre-Kindergarten.  I can’t believe that he will start kindergarten in the Fall.  He is not a baby anymore, though in my heart he will always be my first baby.  I look forward to what next year has for him.  We and his teachers have prepared him well for elementary school and he is certainly looking forward to going.  He had the most wonderful three teachers this year and we will be sad to say goodbye…thank goodness he gets to be with them this summer.

I am so proud of the little boy that he is and I look forward to watching him learn all new things and continue to grow into the person that God desires of Him.

Congratulations BooBa!

The kids did a western themed show at their graduation before the diploma presentation.
They sang. They danced. The did an amazing job! Look at their smiles.

Me and Mine | June Edition

Yes, these are mine.  My sweet babies that I am blessed to call my children.  Are they perfect little angels all the time…no, are they always cooperative when I pull my camera out of the bag…absolutely not. But I will say this, they LOVE taking a picture if I am in it with them and not behind the camera.  I guess this speaks to what a difference it makes to them when I am in the moment rather than behind the camera capturing the moment.  I know this is pretty easy mom stuff we all know and sometimes need to remember, but really this photograph is all the reminder I need this month.

My mantra, “Be with them, in the moment”

Here we are.  They are each mine. They are each gifts that God has given me. Gifts that I am to cherish, love, nurture, and be in the moment with.

Out to a simple lunch on a Sunday afternoon.  Captured using expired Fuji 800z, desaturated because the color was super wonky and the images are super grainy from using expired film!  But I love how they look as black and white photographs.

Connections: 1

connected beauty-Jayme-Franklin-Photography

con·nec·tion/kəˈnekSHən/
Noun: A relationship in which a person, thing, or idea is linked or associated with something else.

Connections to my past, my memories, those fleeting moments in my life, this is what I try to capture when I pick up my camera. Connections in our lives are important, they bring us together to tell the story, and weave a common thread from our pasts to our presents, and futures. Some connections are obvious, some are more obscure, but they are important to the narrative. My new personal project, called Connections, is inspired by the very talented photographer Rebecca Conway and her personal project named Common Thread.

With this project I hope to connect my photography, my art, to the things that tell my story, that weave the pieces of me together. Film is just the right media for this project as it encourages me to slow down, and capture just the right frame that ties all of me together.

O.K., so I’m gonna warn you this is a bit of an over share.  This month I decided to truly capture my family by shooting using only my iphone. My kids and my husband seem to be less apprehensive of the camera if it is in the form of the harmless phone.  Best part is that that I tried out the new camera app VSCO cam.  It is amazing and lets me edit each photo with lots more options than Instagram right on my iphone (i.e. not photoshop, no LR). If you love using your iphone for everyday moments, it is an amazing app.

Don’t forget, to follow the link to the next photographer joining me this month in capturing our families just the way they are… next up is Chesney Maxwell!

Here is my familia, from start to end in 10 hour, and 46 photos (you read it right Carey Pace, 49 photos, yep it’s an overshare!). A beautiful Sunday all around!

This month our group theme or prompt is the word Display. When I am stumped with how to interpret a prompt I tend to go the literal route for the meaning of a word. So, by

Google’s definition: dis·play/disˈplā/
Verb:  Make a prominent exhibition of (something) in a place where it can be easily seen.

My definition:  To show something in public view.

All this week I pondered how I was going to photograph {Display}. I could easily photograph my mountainous display of laundry needing to be washed or better yet, the nicely folded piles of laundry sitting in the chair next to my bed that I haven’t yet put away from last week. These would really be {Displays} of my humanness, my letting some things go. Instead of boring all of you with my dirty or nicely but not yet put away laundry (literally) I decided to get my kids involved in interpreting this prompt.

This is how it went.
“Each of you go choose one thing from your room that you really want me to show me, something you really really want me to take a picture of. But here is the trick…you have to share with Mommy WHY you chose this one thing. O.K., GO!.”

My son ultimately decided on a stack of Ninjago maps that he worked on at school.  Not the most interesting to photograph or to show, but….his reasoning for why he wanted to display them was that if we ever got lost from home, we would have a map to help us find our way.  He is a brilliant little boy, this one. And don’t you just love how he arranged and displayed his maps for me to see and photograph!

My daughter took a really long time in her room deciding what she wanted to show me.  I was a afraid that she was redressing herself into some wild mismatched outfit :-) .  After much consideration she presented me with her old,  worn, lovey that she sleeps with each night.  When I asked her why she chose her lovey, she simply said because he is “cuddley” and “because his nose is broken”.  Funny enough, she wanted to show me her lovey, but she became really shy when I tried to take pictures of her with lovey.  I really thinks this speaks to the specialness of her lovey, it is hers, not something she really wants to share.  And that is o.k.

There you have it.  These are the things right now that my kids want to show me.  The things that they think are important enough to Display around our home.  And it’s a good thing because I think in our whole house we have maybe 6 pictures on our wall, but this last comment I’ll save for another day, another post!

Joining me this month are 9 other amazing photographers.  Visit the circle by starting with Melissa Deakin | Buffalo NY Family Photographer.
