10-on-10 | June Edition

San-Mateo-Family-Photographer-1

O.K., so I’m gonna warn you this is a bit of an over share.  This month I decided to truly capture my family by shooting using only my iphone. My kids and my husband seem to be less apprehensive of the camera if it is in the form of the harmless phone.  Best part is that that I tried out the new camera app VSCO cam.  It is amazing and lets me edit each photo with lots more options than Instagram right on my iphone (i.e. not photoshop, no LR). If you love using your iphone for everyday moments, it is an amazing app.

Don’t forget, to follow the link to the next photographer joining me this month in capturing our families just the way they are… next up is Chesney Maxwell!

Here is my familia, from start to end in 10 hour, and 46 photos (you read it right Carey Pace, 49 photos, yep it’s an overshare!). A beautiful Sunday all around!

10-on-10 | May Edition

It’s time for my 10-on-10 post. Posted on the 10th of each month, this project captures a day or two of seeing my life through the lens. Capturing the everyday. Truth be told, I struggle with taking images of the everyday, they feel so much more like snapshots when I take them. Some of my friends like Amy Lucy and Carey Pace make taking these everyday images seem like works of art. I think what I have realized is that I like taking portraits, or capturing images of my family just as they are. I like seeing their eyes in my pictures…it is how I connect with my subject. So this month, instead of trying to force the creative images I grabbed my film camera, knowing that I had a fresh roll of black and white film already loaded and I aimed to take pictures of my family through out a day. I knew I wanted to get pictures of them looking at the camera, connecting with me, helping me tell the story of their day. And here it is.

One roll of black and white film, 15 images, 10 hours. From waking up to breakfast, to getting dressed, to nap time, to bike rides, and outfit changes. My family. And that last shot of me was taken by my son (he is good!).

Also, joining me in my creative journey is my friend Christine Battad | Honolulu HI Lifestyle Photographer.

10-on-10 | April Edition

Welcome back to my April Edition of my 10-on-10.  This project is about photographing my everyday life.  The beautiful, the ugly, the hard, the soft and everything in between.  It is about capturing the essence of a moment.

This month, I took a bit of shortcut or liberty with my 10-on-10 interpretation.  Instead of 10 photos from one day within 10 hours, I’m giving you my favorite 10 images from one roll of film I took this month.  Funny enough, these were all shot in about 10 minutes of each other.

This is my family, just being us after dinner one night.  We raced around our front yeard, dancing around on the grass, giving loves and hugs, and of course a sassy face or two in front of Mama’s camera!  I need nights like this to help balance out those days that seem long, hard, and overwhelming.  Thank goodness for these 3 peeps.  Their smiles and their love is my compass

Now head on over and visit my friend Chesney Maxwell and see her beautiful family for her 10-on-10 this month.  I adore the ladies in our group and look forward to see all of their posts, and you will too!

10-on-10 | February Edition

I have found that over the last couple months that personal projects are a must! Whether they are photography, journaling, crafting, baking, etc…personal projects help us to grow and sometime find ourselves when we are a little bit lost. My 10-on-10 project is a personal project aimed at capturing my family in more photos. Capturing them and who they really are. But for me this project is also about sharing those moments. How many of you have hundreds of photos of your family that sit on your hard drive where few of them see the light of day because your too busy blogging other peoples family session, or you just don’t have the energy at the end of the day to cull, edit, and prepare the images for a blog post. I fall into both of these categories at times, and this is why I love the 10-on-10 project. I make a point of shooting for myself and sharing those photos!

This month, I did something a little bit different. 10 photos, in 10 minutes. Shooting with more intent and really working to take a photo that sings to me. This is going to be different than how most of my friends in this blog-circle approached this project, which is typically 10 photos over 10 hours, documenting the day. But in our group we have an understanding, this project is personal and we want to shoot what inspires us, what makes us happy. Remember you can catch a glimpse of each of photographers’ days by following the link at the end of my post.

I decided to have what I call a, “Simple Session” with my youngest, full of uncomplicated goodness. 10 photos, 10 minutes, thats it. I feel like these really captured her. She is sweet, she is still a toddler with her lovey, she is sassy, she is happy, she is shy-ish, she is mommy’s love bug. She is mine.

{10-on-10} 10 photos over 10 minutes, shown in the order taken. To see other Simple Sessions, go here and here.

Next up this month in the 10-on-10 is my sweet and talented friend Laurie Vengoechea of A Favored Life.  Also if you get a moment check out her Food Photography Challenge and her recipes (yum)…amazing work!

10-on-10 | January 2012 Edition

Currently, my days are filled with time. I am on an 8 week sabbatical from work and I am using this time to ‘find myself’ after a really long 2011. I started this 10-on-10 project at a time when my work life was crazy and hectic, and at a time when there was a lot of change happening in my family. I felt like my photography really reflected the crazy hectic circle of life that I was leading. Finally, I am slowly relaxing, the tension in my shoulders is easing, my curt tone of words is lessening and the rubber band that was wound WAY too tight is slowly unraveling…inhale, exhale.
In the midst of ringing in 2012, I was pleased to shoot my 10-on-10 on a very lazy Saturday this past week. If you are new to my blog, my 10-on-10 post is about capturing the moment, photographing those slices of life that tell a story, that make you feel like you were there. These are the photographs that I want my kids to look back on, and really ‘see’ the life we experienced as a family. I am joined in this project by 9 other photographers with similar goals of capturing real life. Be sure to follow the links to the next photographers blog in this circle.

This month, I find I am fascinated with pockets of light that I don’t get to see during the day because I am usually at work. I love light, I love how it dances, reflects, diffracts, and creates shadows. So you’ll see some of my favorite light.

Now I am thrilled to be sharing this project with Chesney Maxwell | The Maxwell House Family & Photography Blog . She is an amazing photographer, with the cutest girls you’ve ever seen! When your done checking out what my day looked like, head on over and see how she captured hers.

10-on-10 | December Edition

I am here. It’s December. I am just trying to make it through to January. This is one of those projects that is helping me to make it through. I feel renewed and connected when I pull together my 10-on-10 post. What is 10-on-10? 10-on-10 is 10 photos from one day in my ordinary, blessed, chaotic, real life. It is taking photos of what I really love.  I started this project with the aim of capturing my life, the raw, the beautiful, my family, my friends, my work. I didn’t want to look back and see only portraits of my kids. I want to look back and see my family and say, Yes, I remember that….

I am lucky to be doing this project with nine other photographers, that for reasons of their own see value in slowing down for a day and capturing 10 photos that tell a story of where their lives. Please click the link at the bottom of my post to see the next photographer and her 10-on-10.

This month, I stepped out of my comfort zone (a lot) and decided that I would shoot this project using film. My adventures in film have been a quiet journey and I was super excited to capture a day with my family.

10-on-10 | November Edition

Wow, I can’t believe that we are in our fourth installment of the 10-on-10 project. My 10-on-10 project is very personal project and different than the other photography projects (like my Project 52) that I’ve taken on this year. My project 52 this year was really aimed at improving my photographic vision, composition, and creativity. This project is about photographing what I love, what I want to look back and remember most, where rules of composition, high ISO and blurry photos are the least of my concerns. I’ve had to move past the thoughts about what clients or potential clients might think when they see these pictures as some are not technically perfect. But my 10-on-10 post is for me, and I am just happy that you are here to share in it.

I am joined by several wonderful photographers in this journey of capturing 10 photos over 10 hours that show the realness of life, the moments to remember. When you are done reading my post please follow the link at the bottom to visit my friend, Laurie of A Favored Life and see how she captured her day.

This month, I was so happy to have my mom down for a long visit. It’s been about 18 months since I’ve spent any real length of time with her. She has spent the last 18 months battling breast cancer. For any of you who know my mom and have met her in person, you know that she is strong. She is a fighter. I am thankful that she has made it to the end of the treatments and is feeling like herself again. Her visit was a perfect time for me to capture my 10-on-10. I am beyond words thankful to have photographs of her with her grandchildren. I have so few pictures of her from my childhood because she was always the one taking them (sound familiar), so this time around I made her promise not to hate my camera and just let me capture those moments with her grandchildren.

Ten-on-Ten | October Edition

It’s October, and it’s the 10th, so I am back with my 10-on-10 post. This series started back in August when Shannon Harrison of Jack and Ruby Studios posted an amazing personal project on her blog. Her post was so real and on target with where I was feeling in my own photography journey. Several of us over at The Bloom Forum were inspired by Shannon’s post and kicked off our own 10-on-10 group, and here we are for our third installment (click here to see last months). How does it work? On the tenth of each month, the photographers in my blog circle will link their blogs together to share ten images taken over the course of ten hours in a day. No matter what, the important point is to shoot for ourselves the things we want to remember most, the details, the moments.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been sending little emails to the 10-0n-10 group encouraging them to take photographs for themselves, and document something that they will look back at and have a sigh of relief that they took the time to capture those moments. For me this usually means capturing my kids being kids.  But this month I decided to photograph something a little different…a day with my co-workers. These are the peeps that I spend most of my time with day to day. We are all scientist of some sort that come together, work hard, meet timelines and rinse and repeat! On this particular day though, the work group that I am a part of planned an offsite for team building, for fun, and for food. We were also celebrating a birthday, and getting ready to say good-bye to a friend that was moving away.

The group activity chosen for the offsite was at an industrial arts center called, The Crucible in Oakland, CA. Our team task, to make a glass fired mosaic, where each of us made a 4 x 4 inch mosaic tile that was to become part of a large group art installation. The theme of the installation…work life balance. Each of us came up with our own design and had two hours to cut all the glass, and glue them in place to make our art. I’m not sure any of us really knew what to expect, but I know in the end that everyone had a wonderful time hanging out, conversing, and learning a little bit more about each other. And lunch was delicious, though I pretty sure that the people sitting across from me at lunch eyed my camera wearily with each bite.

I hope you enjoy seeing the wonderful group of people that I work with! It was such a nice way to spend the day!

And remember you can check out the next photographer in the circle, starting with my friend Laurie Vengoechea of a Favored Life!
