Spooky | Scary movies from my childhood

Have you ever watched a movie at a young age, where that movie has just stuck with you? Whether it is the best movie of all time or the funniest, or the scariest, it just sticks with you. Poltergeist is one of the movies from my childhood that I KNOW with out a doubt that I should not have been allowed to watch at the impressionable age of 9! After watching that movie I never looked at a fuzzy, static television screen again! Thank goodness for cable. Poltergeist is a scary film classic from the 80′s featuring an all too sweet looking, cherub-faced, blonde, little girl who connects with not so nice ghosts through the static in the television. The spooky tale twists and turns and ends with the family fleeing their imploded family home that was built upon a desecrated cemetery, with the bodies and corpses rotting beneath their home.

Yep, at 9 years old, I never forgot this scary, spooky, movie. And even now when my own little cherub-faced blondie walks up to the big screen arms open wide, I think to myself…”they’re here”!

Joining me this week to explore the theme of spooky and getting ready for a frightfully fun Halloween is my friend Melissa Deakin | Buffalo New York Family and Childrens Photographer.

And just for fun, I’ve included the film’s poster advertisement from 1982!

Me and Mine.
Sometime I look at this project as a view into the moments that I share with my children, right where we are in our relationships. Many of my Me and Mine photographs are not “portrait-like”, but tell a story. This month, this photograph, for me speaks volumes about my relationship with my daughter.
My daughter is my baby, and when I affectionately call her “my baby girl” she quickly corrects me with “I’m not a baby”. Lately, I catch myself looking at her and wanting her to stay this age for ever, with her cherub cheeks and fine wispy blonde hair. But I know that this age is fleeting. She is becoming this strong independent little person, with scabbed knees, dirty elbows, and flare for the dramatic. She wants to be older, to do the things that her brother does and to the same level, there is competition. I find myself having to temper some of her desires, explaining that she is not quite old enough, or big enough, or just not ready yet. And then there is the pouting, the tantrums, the sassyness that follows. These days are exhausting, and yet I still want to savor every single moment. They grow up way too too fast, and I know I will look back wishing for tantrums over simple issues rather than the more grown up complex ones. If only I could freeze time…

Through the Window | San Mateo and Belmont Family Portrait Photography

Have you ever walked down a familiar street and looked through a window of a shop you’ve never noticed before and said, “Now that looks like my kinda shop!” Well, just that very situation happened to me a couple of weeks ago.  I passed by this sweets shop while running errands one weekend, looked through the window, and decided…yes I will be coming back!  The shop is called Sweet Orchid, and it is located on B-Street in Downtown San Mateo.  This past weekend was full of bright warm sunshine and so Nate and I decided to try out this little shop.  As you can tell we picked the seat right in front of the window. My kids devouring their gelato was entertainment for several passerbys.  The sweets were delicious, the espressos hit the spot, the people watching was too funny, and it was a wonderful afternoon adventure.  We will definitely be coming back!

Joining me this week in the Project 26 creative challenge of Through the Window is my friend Celeste Jones | Wilmington Delaware Photographer.  She is wonderful and is sure to amaze us with her take on the theme!

summer nights | desserts

Warm summer nights invite a bit of creamy indulgence that at any other time of year would leave me with a bit of a chill.  Two of my favorite sweets, vanilla bean ice cream and freshly picked strawberries, meld together to make the perfect Summer Night dessert.

Me and Mine | June Edition

Yes, these are mine.  My sweet babies that I am blessed to call my children.  Are they perfect little angels all the time…no, are they always cooperative when I pull my camera out of the bag…absolutely not. But I will say this, they LOVE taking a picture if I am in it with them and not behind the camera.  I guess this speaks to what a difference it makes to them when I am in the moment rather than behind the camera capturing the moment.  I know this is pretty easy mom stuff we all know and sometimes need to remember, but really this photograph is all the reminder I need this month.

My mantra, “Be with them, in the moment”

Here we are.  They are each mine. They are each gifts that God has given me. Gifts that I am to cherish, love, nurture, and be in the moment with.

Out to a simple lunch on a Sunday afternoon.  Captured using expired Fuji 800z, desaturated because the color was super wonky and the images are super grainy from using expired film!  But I love how they look as black and white photographs.

This month our group theme or prompt is the word Display. When I am stumped with how to interpret a prompt I tend to go the literal route for the meaning of a word. So, by

Google’s definition: dis·play/disˈplā/
Verb:  Make a prominent exhibition of (something) in a place where it can be easily seen.

My definition:  To show something in public view.

All this week I pondered how I was going to photograph {Display}. I could easily photograph my mountainous display of laundry needing to be washed or better yet, the nicely folded piles of laundry sitting in the chair next to my bed that I haven’t yet put away from last week. These would really be {Displays} of my humanness, my letting some things go. Instead of boring all of you with my dirty or nicely but not yet put away laundry (literally) I decided to get my kids involved in interpreting this prompt.

This is how it went.
“Each of you go choose one thing from your room that you really want me to show me, something you really really want me to take a picture of. But here is the trick…you have to share with Mommy WHY you chose this one thing. O.K., GO!.”

My son ultimately decided on a stack of Ninjago maps that he worked on at school.  Not the most interesting to photograph or to show, but….his reasoning for why he wanted to display them was that if we ever got lost from home, we would have a map to help us find our way.  He is a brilliant little boy, this one. And don’t you just love how he arranged and displayed his maps for me to see and photograph!

My daughter took a really long time in her room deciding what she wanted to show me.  I was a afraid that she was redressing herself into some wild mismatched outfit :-) .  After much consideration she presented me with her old,  worn, lovey that she sleeps with each night.  When I asked her why she chose her lovey, she simply said because he is “cuddley” and “because his nose is broken”.  Funny enough, she wanted to show me her lovey, but she became really shy when I tried to take pictures of her with lovey.  I really thinks this speaks to the specialness of her lovey, it is hers, not something she really wants to share.  And that is o.k.

There you have it.  These are the things right now that my kids want to show me.  The things that they think are important enough to Display around our home.  And it’s a good thing because I think in our whole house we have maybe 6 pictures on our wall, but this last comment I’ll save for another day, another post!

Joining me this month are 9 other amazing photographers.  Visit the circle by starting with Melissa Deakin | Buffalo NY Family Photographer.

Me and Mine | May Edition | Project 26

Here we are approaching the end of May. How did we get almost half way through 2012 in a blink of an eye? Life moves so fast, especially if you are like me and chasing young children, working full time at a job, and trying to pursue interests and passions. Photography is my passion. It has been something that I’ve always been interested in, but only in the last couple of years did I really give it more time to study and learn. At times I took it to the extreme, and as a result there were months were my children would cry if I pulled my camera out to take a picture. I am learning that balance in my life and in my passions is essential. So, truth be told, I’ve picked up my digital camera only a few time in the last couple of months to captures those moments that I can’t live without, or shoot projects like this one that I really really value. I’ve let go of photography projects that stressed me out, and now enjoy shooting more film, just for me, just because. I am feeling more balanced.

I started this post with commenting on how fast life moves. My ‘Me and Mine’ post is precious to me because it captures a moment of quiet with my two loves. Snuggled. Still. These photos remind me that these moments are fleeting. I want to be IN these moments because, for the next moment comes quickly and while it is full of laughter and giggles and tickles, that quiet moment when things are still, and not moving at break-neck speeds those are true treasures.

I share this project with several other fantastic photographers that have made it a goal or a gift to themselves to get just one frame of them with their lovies. Please visit my friend Jules Trandem | San Diego Family Photographer to see her Just Us project this month!

Album Cover | San Francisco Child Photographer | Project 26

Welcome back to my Project 26. I am lucky enough to share this project with some pretty amazing and talented photographers. Every couple of weeks we stretch our creative sides and interpret a theme or prompt in a picture(s). This time around our prompt is Album Cover. Last year when I did this theme, John Mayer’s Album Heavier Things was my source of inspiration. This year, my inspiration is Jack Johnson’s album In Between Dreams.
Jack Johnson is one of our most favorite artists in our house. He sings of his family, his friends, his experiences, mostly the good time, some funny, some sad. My family particularly enjoys this album. But, really, the album title is what really inspired me…In Between Dreams.

Dreams are important. Especially when we are young. When I thought about this album title, I thought of my little boy and asked him what he dreamed of becoming one day, what he dreamed of doing most. His answered changed over the course of minutes, hours, days. And you know what, that is how it should be. He has BIG FANTASTICAL DREAMS.  He has the kind of dreams that a little boy should have!  I love it!

Right now, my dream for my little boy is selfish.  My dream for him, is that I would be the kind of mom that makes is possible for my him to be who he want to be, to encourage him to find his own voice and own independence and to follow his dreams because they are his dreams.

This week, joining me on this creative journey my friend Melissa Deakin | Buffalo NY Family Photographer. I love her work and I especially can’t wait to see what she has posted for us today!

Me and Mine | San Mateo Family Portrait Photographer | Project 26

Welcome back to my Project 26, my most favorite project each month! These photos that capture Me and Mine are treasures, way beyond any nicely retouched portrait I will ever take (and I’ve taken A LOT). Joining me this month are 11 incredibly talented photographers, all of us seeking just one precious photo each month of ourselves with our lovies!

For me, before there was these two….

…there was him.
He is my best friend. The person that God chose for me, and me for him. He makes me laugh, he makes me shake my head in frustration (not all the time, but some times), but above all else he loves deeply, and he loves me. And I love him.

{Me and Mine} Nate and Jayme, married 10 years in September (Whoo Hoo)!

Now, please join me in visiting my friend Jules Trandem | San Diego CA Child Photographer and catch a glimpse of how she captured her gorgeous family!
